Advantages of Buying a Car from a Private Seller

    Level the playing field

The ratio of how many cars a dealer has sold to how many cars you’ve bought is wildly unequal. A car dealer might have sold hundreds or even thousands of cars, depending on where they are in their career.  A private seller is coming to the table with similar experience as you, putting no one at a disadvantage in terms of experience.

    Money

There are no dealer fees. Most dealers tack on $500 to $1,000 for “dealer fees,” “documentation fees,” and other miscellaneous fees. A private-party seller has little to no overhead that they need to fund to keep afloat.  Though not necessary, if you have cash to buy the car outright, a private sale is usually the best way to purchase a vehicle.

    Time

A private seller isn’t in the business of selling cars. Between an unrelated fulltime job and family commitments, the private seller wants to sell the car to get money to purchase a new or different car and then get back to their life. You want an eager seller because it means you’ll probably get a good deal!

    How to Buy a Car

Buying a car can be a tricky process if you don’t go into it prepared.  Follow the tips below to make sure you’re getting the right car for you!

Know which type of vehicle you’re looking for

Make a list of your “must haves” in a car and then find that cars that would fulfill your needs. Your car won’t serve you well if it has fancy bells and whistles but is lacking key features that are non-negotiable for you and your family.

Contact the seller at a reasonable hour

Don’t call too early in the morning or too late in the evening. It’s best not to call before 9 a.m. or after 9 p.m. Besides being impolite, the seller might be less apt to fully answer questions to your satisfaction. Let them get their first sip of coffee in and call at a more convenient time.

Verify the make, model, year, mileage, vehicle identification number, and general condition of the vehicle with the seller

All of these attributes affect the price, so weigh these answers in the price. Also ask why the vehicle is being sold. Was the car an impulse purchase of an owner with multiple cars? Or, was the car facing frequent repair issues that you would likely face as the new owner?

Determine a fair purchase price for the vehicle

Before setting up an appointment to see the car, look up the fair market value. Two good sources are the National Auto Dealers Association (NADA) and Kelly Blue Book. Input mileage, condition, and options to generate a ballpark price. These websites list private values, dealer trade-in, and dealer retail.

Compare to the seller’s asking price and decide whether it’s fair or if you should negotiate.

Schedule an appointment to see the car

Take the car for a spin; but don’t stop there:

    • Inspect the vehicle.
    • Ask for the car’s maintenance history.
    • Visit the car during the day so you can see things better; you’ll be less likely to overlook problems.
    • Bring someone knowledgeable about cars with you, if possible.
    • Bring the car to your personal mechanic to have them check out the car.
    Run a Vehicle History Report

A vehicle history report (VHR) is a statement that includes information about a vehicle’s ownership and repair history. You can get a vehicle history report online, on sites such as Carfax or Autocheck.

    Make an offer

If the car suits you and there are some minor defects, consider making an offer below Blue Book value.

    Buying the vehicle

Exchange driver’s licenses with the seller once you have all of the paperwork. Make sure the number matches the information on the title and paperwork. Also make sure there are no liens on the vehicle.

    Get the signed title

Fill out and mutually sign all the paperwork and get the title from the seller. Make the payment in certified check, cashier’s check, money order, or manager’s check. This secures the title until you can get to the DMV to register the car in your own name.

Remove anything the seller might have forgotten in the car

This includes license plates and personal items. Also make sure you get things from the seller that go with the car, such as extra car keys. No sense in keeping things that would be beneficial to the other party!

    Good luck!

    And above all, be honest.
